Writer highlights a Croatia's coastal 'hidden gem'
The town of Cavtat provides a relaxed and charming alternative to the "breathtakingly beautiful" - but often busy - city of Dubrovnik, according to one travel writer.
Likening Dubrovnik to a chocolate box, Linda Cookson claims that the rustic charm of Cavtat represents more of a paintbox, with picturesque brownstone houses and cobbled streets.
Only a 45-minute bus or boat ride away from Dubrovnik, the natural beauty of the area attracts many artists, with art galleries also in evidence celebrating Vlaho Bukovac, the acclaimed Croatian painter, she comments.
"Here you will have the best of both worlds. You can enjoy the relaxed rhythm of life in a colourful waterfront community, while knowing that you can sample the attractions of Dubrovnik whenever you like," she writes in the Independent newspaper.
From July through to August, Cavtat hosts its cultural season, featuring both folk music and sports tournaments.
The Croatian National Tourist Board notes that the town is remarkable for its "nice shores" and "luxuriant vegetation".
