Turkish tourism sector continues to grow
Turkey's efforts to attract more holidaymakers to the country appear to be paying off, new figures have revealed.
According to official data, 7.3 million foreign tourists visited Turkey between January and May 2008, reports Hurriyet.
This is 15% higher than the amount recorded during the same period of 2006.
Many of these visitors were found to hail from other European countries, with 17.5% coming from Germany.
Meanwhile, a large number of Russian holidaymakers was also recorded, along with Britons, Dutch, French and Bulgarian tourists.
The figures will be welcome reading for tourism officials in the country, as they are currently aiming to encourage more foreign visitors to its shores.
Earlier this week, tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay stated that he wants annual visitor numbers to increase from 23 million in 2007 to more than 25 million this year.
