Turkey 'will speed up reform process for EU accession aim'

Turkey has said it will speed up its reform process to boost its chances of gaining accession to the EU sooner, according to a recent report.

Following talks with EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn, Turkish foreign minister Abdullah Gul said his country is focused on the future and intends to continue its reform process in an "even stronger" manner.

Quoted by the Xinhua news agency, Mr Rehn explained that although he was pleased with Turkey's progress, there still much work to be done.

"Freedom of expression, religious freedoms, women's rights, union rights must be enlarged. Political forces in Turkey should act together to modernise and reform Turkey," remarked Mr Rehn.

He concluded by saying that these are things that are important to achieve not only for the EU, but for Turkey, too.

Although Turkey has become a popular destination for western tourists and property investors alike, the country's legal, economic and cultural infrastructure must be overhauled in order to achieve EU membership.
