Turkey is one of the world's 'most important tourist destinations'
Turkey is one of the most important tourist countries in the world, according to the Turkish tourism minister.
The Hurriyet Daily News reports that the tourism expert made the comments at a ceremony where he received a reward from the tourism organisation Skal.
Ertugrul Gnay said that the country was predicted to receive 25 million visitors in 2009, however the number has already reached 26 million. He added that "per capita tourist income is expected to rise above the world average".
Figures from the UK foreign office show that over two million Brits visit Turkey each year.
Mr Gnay said that the country wants to expand and become an all year round destination.
Next year is already set to be a big one for the country as the worldwide economy comes out of recession and higher levels of disposable income could mean a tourism boost.
The strength of the euro means more people are choosing to holiday outside the European Union and there are good links in place between major UK airports and destinations in Turkey.
