Turkey 'has resilient economy'
A leading figure in the Turkish financial sector has praised the resilience of the country's economy.
According to Ulrich Zachau of the World Bank, the European nation is on a much stronger footing than it was during the financial crisis of 2001.
Therefore, he believes Turkey is much better placed to deal with the current turmoil in the global markets.
"Turkey is a different country than it was when the 2001 economic crisis hit," he commented.
Speaking at a conference in London about the Turkish financial system, he added that foreign direct investment has proved to be very important to the economy and is likely to remain so in future.
The comments come after culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay was quoted by the Turkish Daily News as saying that people across the world are continuing to take foreign holidays.
He stated that Turkey is well-placed to benefit as consumers from other European countries in particular are tending to visit relatively close destinations.
