Turkey 'can withstand global pressures'

Turkey's prime minister has insisted that the country is well-placed to withstand the current turmoil on the financial markets.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the European nation is being affected by ongoing economic problems across the world, reports the Turkish Daily News.

However, he stated that its rapid development in recent years means it is much stronger than it once was and can therefore cope with the global downturn.

Mr Erdogan commented: "Turkey is no longer weak in the face of this sort of crisis and waves, but is a country that is enforcing the macroeconomic infrastructure of its economy."

He added that the government had spent recent years consciously making sure the economy would be prepared for "unexpected" developments, such as the credit crunch.

This, he said, show that the government has been decisive and taken the initiative for the country and its people.

Earlier this week, the American Chronicle reported that Turkey has experienced uninterrupted economic growth for 22 consecutive quarters.
