Turkey attracts Spanish holidaymakers

Owners of rental accommodation in Turkey could be set to see greater demand from Spanish holidaymakers this year.

According to the Turkish tourism ministry, the overall number of visitors from Spain in 2008 is likely to be higher than the amount recorded a year earlier.

Spokesperson Ismail Aksel stated that over the last five years, the country has been attracting more and more Spanish leisure travellers.

Speaking to TurkishPress.com, he predicted that this trend is likely to continue.

He commented: "During the first 3 months of 2008, there was a 20% rise in the number of Spanish tourists over the same period of last year."

Mr Aksel added that authorities are aiming to boost annual visitor numbers from Spain to about 350,000 by the end of this year.

According to property author Dominic Whiting, efforts to attract more holidaymakers to Turkey are helping to enhance its appeal to foreign investors.

Mr Whiting stated that the holiday industry has had a "hugely beneficial" effect on the country's housing market, thereby making it a good option for overseas property buyers.
