Turkey aims to preserve natural environment
Officials in Turkey have unveiled new plans to minimise the effect of property investment on the environment.
The European country has recently become a hotspot for foreign property buyers, which has prompted the government to introduce rules limiting the level of development in certain areas.
However, Today's Zaman reports that it has now introduced a new initiative which will require investors to directly compensate for their impact on the natural world.
The government has said that property buyers who knock down trees in order to build a home should plant twice as many in order to make up for the environmental damage.
Culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay commented: "I say this as a pledge and a commitment."
The newspaper recently cited figures showing that between 2003 and 2007, foreign nationals spent more than £5 billion on Turkish real estate.
