Tourists to head for eastern Europe

Rental investors in eastern European cities such as Dubrovnik could be set to experience a surge of demand this summer.

According to the Post Office, the region is likely to attract an increased number of visitors this year because it is much cheaper than many traditional tourist destinations.

The organisation said less expensive locations may become popular with holidaymakers because ongoing economic problems across the world are currently affecting consumer confidence.

In addition, the Post Office has predicted that financial concerns will prompt many to choose the more cost-effective option of taking two or three short breaks a year rather than an extended two-week holiday.

Helen Warburton, head of travel at the group, commented: "Costs in eastern Europe are generally lower than in the western cities."

This should prove to be a positive development for owners of rental property in countries such as Croatia, as it suggests there will be increased demand for tourist accommodation.

According to official figures, about 11 million holidaymakers chose to visit Croatia between January and November 2007 - 8% more than during the same period of the previous year.
