Tourists choose to rent private property
Holidaymakers from the UK are increasingly choosing to spend their break in a private villa overseas.
According to Holiday-Rentals, these properties have proved to be very popular because they allow people to avoid problems commonly associated with large complexes.
For example, the organisation said tourists could avoid the "daily fight" for sun loungers and enjoy more privacy and security.
The increased popularity of self-catering holidays in privately rented accommodation accounts for why many buy-to-let investors favour major tourist destinations.
Since private villas are in strong demand, they are seen to be potentially lucrative investments that can provide high rental returns.
Greg Grant, managing director of Holiday-Rentals, commented: "Self-catering villas with pools are one of the most popular options for a family holiday."
According to recent figures from the group, almost a third of British-owned properties in Europe are located in Spain.
