Tourism thrives amid economic turmoil

Economic uncertainties are not having a negative effect on the global tourist market, new figures have revealed.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the number of journeys being undertaken by leisure travellers has gone up this year.

Statistics showed that between January and April 2008, international tourist arrivals were 5% up on the same period of 2007.

Strong increases were recorded in many long-haul destinations, although European countries such as Turkey also saw double-digit growth rates.

As a result, the UNWTO is quietly optimistic about the outlook for global tourism, despite ongoing economic problems across the world.

Francesco Frangialli, secretary general of the body, commented: "Given current circumstances we are cautious, although we remain positive for the overall industry perspectives in 2008."

The release of the figures comes shortly after the CBI said that demand for trips abroad among British consumers is still very strong.
