Survey finds that vast majority of Bulgarians back smoking ban

The vast majority of Bulgarians are in favour of some form of public smoking ban, according to the findings of a new survey.

An ongoing report from the Bulgarian ministry of health - commissioned for a European committee - revealed that 96% of Bulgarians are in favour of a full or partial public smoking ban.

Conversely, only 4% said they are in favour of retaining the right to smoking in public areas.

So far, 264 Bulgarian people have been quizzed about their views on smoking, with the survey set to end on April 15th 2007.

The findings could prompt a wider investigation into the merits of a public smoking ban in the country, if the final report still shows a strong support for a smoking ban in Bulgaria.

Currently, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have a full public smoking ban in force, while EU states including Italy, Sweden and Belgium have smoking bans with various exemptions. Estonia and Finland will introduce smoking bans on June 1st 2007, with England to follow on July 1st 2007.
