Sporting events boost overseas flights
Popular and high profile international sporting events are contributing to a boost in overseas flights, with a number of airports reporting a notable increase in passenger traffic.
New figures from the British Airports Authority (BAA) reveal that international air passenger traffic across its 3 Scottish airports alone increased by 17% in March, thought to partly be the result of prominent sporting events.
Football fixtures in Spain have been highlighted as one key source of increased passenger numbers as fans from the UK jet abroad to catch live football action at relatively low cost. According to the Scotsman total passenger numbers across BAA's seven UK airports rose by 3.7% last month.
European scheduled traffic grew by almost 5% during the month, indicative of the ongoing popularity of low cost air travel among European travellers.
The 2008 UEFA European Football Championship will be taking place in Austria and Switzerland next year, during which time a surge in European travel and tourism is anticipated. Many football fans will be looking for temporary accommodation during the event, which could spell lucrative times ahead for those with overseas property.
