Spanish tourist market sees growth

Spain is continuing to attract a large number of foreign visitors, new figures have revealed.

According to official data, about 4.4 million leisure travellers visited the European country last month, reports Reuters.

This is 7.4% up on the amount recorded 12 months earlier, a fact which has been partly attributed to the early Easter holiday this year.

Figures also showed that during the first quarter of the year, visitor numbers were 5.3 per cent higher than during the same period of 2007.

More than 10 million people chose to visit Spain between January and March, mainly to places such as Catalonia and the Canary Islands.

The increase on 2007's figures suggests that the overall number of visitors to Spain could be higher this year.

According to the Spanish government, the country attracted 59.2 million people last year - 1.7% more than in 2006.
