Spanish tourism sector records growth

The Spanish tourist industry has experienced further growth in the last year, according to official data.

Government figures showed that during 2007, Spain attracted 59.2 million leisure travellers from other countries.

This is 1.7% higher than the figure recorded for the previous year.

Statistics showed that Britons accounted for one in four visitors to Spain, closely followed by people from Germany, France and the US.

Meanwhile, the increase in visitor numbers was also found to have boosted the overall revenue generated by the tourist sector.

The amount produced by the holiday industry rose by 4.3% in 2007 to £35 billion, the government stated.

Spain's popularity among people from other countries was recently found to extend beyond its appeal as a holiday destination.

According to a poll by A Place in the Sun magazine, it is the first choice destination among foreign property buyers from the UK.
