Spanish tourism authorities to launch marketing drive

Tourism authorities in Spain are responding to the economic downturn by marketing the country as a winter holiday destination.

Although Spain is still widely regarded as a hotspot for leisure travellers, the government is keen to ensure the recent slide in visitor numbers does not continue.

As a result, it has invested in strategies such as promoting attractions including its favourable climate in the winter months.

"It's a proposal by the government to attract people outside the usual summer holiday period," a tourism ministry spokesperson said.

"We are renowned for our sun and that sun shines all year round."

However, the representative could not commit to any specific details regarding the marketing strategy, as ideas are currently at an "early stage".

According to the Association of British Travel Agents, Spain is currently the most popular foreign destination among tourists from the UK.
