Spain 'still top for overseas property investment'

Spain still ranks as the top destination for overseas property investment, with both new and existing investors seeking to expand their portfolios, an expert has said.

Darren Fretwell, head of UK sales at NatWest International, claimed that the increase in investment in Spain has allowed the number of property agents to expand, making it easier to buy new properties in the area.

Furthermore, despite many headlines promoting the benefits of new EU member states, Spain has remained a "firm favourite" with Britons looking to buy abroad, he noted in an article for MortgageSolutions magazine.

"When looking at the risks of buying property abroad, the Spanish market is about as established as it gets," said Mr Fretwell.

"The price of the average property in Spain is estimated to have risen by 10% over the past five years and although the rate of further growth may slow, there is no evidence to suggest it will stop," he added.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, more Britons own second homes in Spain than in any other country.
