Spain 'still popular with older buyers'

Spain remains a hotspot for Britons planning to retire overseas, according to an industry expert.

A study carried out by the Institute for Public Policy Research concluded that 3.3 million British pensioners will be living overseas by 2050, which could mean that the market for property in popular retirement destinations proves to be a lucrative one for investors.

Lisa Harris of Saga Travel Money said that the low cost of housing in some of the countries which have recently joined the EU has created interest from older people thinking about leaving the UK.

However, many people planning to spend their retirement in the sun still prefer familiar locations and Ms Harris explained: "The most popular destinations chosen by those retiring from the UK are Spain and France in that order."

She added that health and climate are two of the most important factors older people consider when they decide to relocate overseas.
