Spain records increased visitor numbers

Established markets such as Spain are still proving to be highly attractive destinations to foreign travellers, according to new figures.

Data from the country's tourism ministry showed that during September, 6.1 million holidaymakers arrived in the country.

This is 1.8% higher than during the same period of 2006, indicating an increase in the popularity of Spain as a holiday destination.

The figures, which are likely to be welcomed by rental investors in the country, also showed that the number of visitors for the year to date also went up.

Between January and September 2007, the amount of tourists going to Spain rose by 2.2% on the previous year to 47.6 million.

This comes after the Office for National Statistics found that more than half of foreign trips undertaken by British travellers in the year to August were to countries in Europe.

Figures showed that the continent grew in popularity by 1% on 2006.
