Spain 'is still a popular destination'
Spain is still the most popular overseas destination for leisure travellers, according to new figures.
Research by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) found that during 2006, tourists mainly flew to the Spanish resorts of Palma, Malaga and Alicante for their holidays.
This could be of interest to people considering investing in the Spanish property market, as owners of rental accommodation could cash in on the influx of holidaymakers.
The CAA also found that the number of people flying out from regional airports had gone up, drawing people away from the more established international airports.
During the last two years, the number of people travelling from Heathrow was said to have dropped by 3%.
Meanwhile, there was a four per cent increase in the number of people travelling from local airports.
According to a recent survey commissioned by the British Air Transport Association, almost three-quarters of the population flew between 2001 and 2006.
The research also found that more than one in five people boarded a plane more than four times a year.
