Spain bids to host Ryder Cup

Authorities in Spain have revealed that they have applied to host the Ryder Cup in 2018.

The government has submitted its bid to stage the international golf tournament as it believes it could be good for the country's economy, the Associated Press reports.

According to cultural and tourism minister Santiago Fisas, the Ryder Cup generated £113 million in revenues for Ireland when it hosted the event two years ago.

Therefore, he is hoping that Spain could benefit in a similar way if it is successful with its bid.

Commenting on the move, Mr Fisas said it could be "very important from the point of view of the economy and the repercussions it has".

The Ryder Cup is contested every two years and will be staged at Celtic Manor in Wales in 2010.

Spain has not hosted the event since 1997, when the world's top golfers played at Valderrama.
