Spain and Turkey 'popular with Swedes'

Swedish holidaymakers are increasingly choosing to visit Spain and Turkey, according to a leading diplomat.

Ambassador Christer Asp stated that the two countries were the most popular tourist destinations among leisure travellers from Sweden.

He predicted that Turkey would receive about 400,000 holidaymakers from the Scandinavian nation in summer 2008.

In addition, he stated that it was rapidly catching up in with Spain in terms of popularity, particularly with groups such as older people.

Mr Asp commented: "Our retired citizens used to settle in Spain following retirement - now they choose Turkey for settlement."

He went on to back Turkey's bid to join the European Union, citing Sweden as an example of a country that overcame initial objections to entering the international body.

Other member states including the UK have already expressed support for its proposed entry into the EU.
