Spain and Portugal property investment not just about the weather

It comes of little surprise that the main reason given by UK expats for living abroad is the weather, according to the joint managing director of Alliance & Leicester International.

Alliance & Leicester recently published the results of a survey which showed 57 per cent of UK expats cited better weather as a factor in their decision to move abroad, and Simon Ripton believes this to be expected given the misery associated with the average British winter.

"It is easy to see why they would think that," he commented, adding this is especially so since we are "coming into winter".

However, he also pointed out that there are a number of other reasons as to why people would prefer to invest in property in Spain or Portugal than stay at home in the UK.

"They have a higher standard of living and a better quality of life," he explained.

"Other factors such as a lower crime rate and higher income also rate highly."

Statistics released by the Office for National Statistics in October this year highlight how in the 12 months to August British people were making more trips abroad than they did in the year previously.
