Second home owners advised to insure contents

Second home owners in the UK have been advised to make sure their possessions are fully insured.

According to Zurich Private Clients, holiday homes owned by British people collectively contain more than £6.3 billion of items.

This works out to over £15,000 worth of goods on average, reports the Press Association.

Since many of these properties are left unoccupied for extended periods of time, owners are being encouraged to make sure they are covered in the event of any incident.

Nick Brabham, spokesperson for Zurich, commented: "There has been a steady rise in the number of customers with second homes, either in the UK or abroad."

Therefore, he has said people should not compromise on making sure hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of their possessions are safe.

Mr Brabham's advice comes after the Guardian newspaper suggested that holiday home owners consider letting out their property.

This, it said, could be a "nice little earner", as it could help investors offset some of the initial costs they have incurred.
