Rural Croatia recognised in European awards
Countries that are currently bidding to enter the European Union have been recognised in a new award scheme.
The Eden Awards (European Destinations of Excellence) identified ten of the best emerging rural destinations across the continent and included nations such as Croatia.
One of the named areas was the Sveti Martin na Muri region, which was praised for its natural beauty.
Features such as its thermal spring of medicinal water were said to be one of the most beautiful spas in the country.
Commenting on the awards, European commission vice president Gunter Verheugen said: "The Eden Project supports European tourism and enhances the visibility of several non-traditional destinations."
He added that it also rewarded successful business models and sustainable forms of tourism.
According to the Southeast European Times, Croatia is aiming to compete with established markets such as Greece and Turkey by attracting more visitors and offering reasonably-priced holidays.
This could significantly add to its appeal as an overseas property investment market.
