Romanian property 'still relatively cheap'

The cost of living in Romania is comparably cheap to that in the UK, according to a report.

Expat Debbie Stowe, writing for the Telegraph, initially arrived in Bucharest intending to stay for a year, but three years later she is still living there.

She explains that property prices are climbing quite quickly but are easily affordable by British standards.

However, the approach to property in the Romanian capital is quite different to the experience of many Brits and not always straightforward.

For example, there is a great deal of red tape surrounding purchases and foreigners are not permitted to own land - though she says there are "ways around this".

"Most people rent at first, although it is advisable to get a local friend to help you," she wrote.

She also warned: "Once the landlord realises a foreigner is involved, the sums involved suddenly leap upwards".

Currency specialist HiFX recently published a report that suggested many Brits were going abroad because of UK house prices and to make longer-term investment.
