Romanian government reaffirms fight against corruption

The president of Romania has reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against corruption in the country, according to a new report.

Although Romania joined the European Union earlier this year, corruption was identified as one of the country's key problems during the accession process.

Now, a recent report from the Romanian national anticorruption department has said that corruption is declining, adding that this is a process that still has some way to go.

Quoted by the South European Times, president Traian Basescu claimed that the publication exposed the fight against corruption "in its entire splendour".

He also reminded prosecutors of their duty to disrupt criminal relationships between businessmen and public officials.

"Your mission is to go to the very end, to the political factor that enables the protection of the high-profile crimes and that costs the Romanian citizen everyday," he remarked.

Romania saw its corruption perception index score improve by one percentage point in 2006, according to Transparency International.
