Reopened train line 'attracts tourists to Argentina'

International tourists are flocking to Argentina to experience a train journey which takes passengers 4,000 metres above sea level.

Known as The Train to the Clouds, the vertiginous vehicle travels high into the Andes from the town of Salta in northern Argentina, where people from all over the world gather to take the trip.

The 250-mile journey lasts for about 16 hours and takes passengers across the La Polvorilla viaduct, a towering structure which straddles two mountain peaks.

"It's totally different from what I've seen before," Roswithr Brueder, a 48-year-old German tourist, told the AFP news agency.

However, those without a head for heights are advised not to take the trip, as passengers have been known to suffer from altitude sickness and oxygen canisters are kept in the carriages for people who become lightheaded.

According to AFP, The Train to the Clouds closed down in 2005 but has proved extremely popular with Argentinians and foreign visitors since reopening earlier this year.

The Andes is the world's longest mountain range, with its highest point at Aconcagua in Argentina's Mendoza province.
