Regional airports 'boost local economies'
Regional airports have been beneficial for local economies both in the UK and overseas, according to experts.
The British Air Transport Association (BATA) said that regional airports were good for the areas which supported them, as they made accessibility much easier for groups such as tourists and holiday home owners.
In addition, the organisation said that the growth of regional airports had led to associated developments that helped local economies, such as infrastructure improvements and increased tourist numbers.
Neal Weston, spokesperson for BATA, commented: "If the services don't work then airlines won't run them. If they don't have enough passengers then they won't be running them."
According to a recent survey commissioned by BATA, almost three-quarters of the population flew between 2001 and 2006.
The research also found that more than one in five people boarded a plane more than four times a year.
