Ras al-Khaimah 'is making big inroads into its accommodation and tourism facilities'

Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expanding its tourism and accommodation infrastructure as it seeks to divert tourists away from its more famous neighbour emirate Dubai, according to a new report.

Business and economic analysis firm Oxford Business Group explained that RAK is making swift progress on property investment and tourist facility fronts, including the creation of two golf courses.

This has improved RAK's stock as a golfing destination in the UAE but watering requirements of golf courses could mean the scope for further courses is limited, the report stated.

However, it may be some time before RAK becomes a household name as a tourist destination. The report authors stated: "Much remains to be done, in particular, in terms of marketing and promotion and although the situation has dramatically improved in the past few years, most people have yet to associate the Gulf with sandy beaches, luxurious resorts or golf courses."

The publication concluded that Dubai's success in recent years as marketing itself as a top-class tourist resort is something that RAK can emulate in forging its own unique identity.

Recently, Blair Hagkull of Jones Lang LaSalle said it is essential that RAK markets itself to demonstrate the strengths of its differences to Dubai.
