Presidential process hits first round

The Turkish presidential election process enters its first round today, with Abdullah Gul going head to head with Sabahattin Cakmakoglu.

Mr Gul, from the ruling Justice and Development party, will now visit the former prime minister Mesut Yilmaz in an attempt to gain his support, reports Today's Zaman.

During the first round of voting, candidates need the support of 367 deputies, the publication stated.

Following this first round, a second round will be held on August 24th if a president is not elected, while a third round is set for August 28th.

It is expected that the Justice and Development party will gain the support of a number of independent voters during the election.

Mr Gul was renominated as the party's candidate after the cancelled election bid in April.

Last week, the government list was handed over to current president Ahmet Necdet Sezer by prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said that the list should be handed to his successor instead.
