Portuguese expect tourism increase
Tourism in Portugal is set to nearly double in the next decade according to the minister of economy Manuel Pinho, which would mean a massive influx of visitors as the popular Mediterranean country already attracts 12 million people a year.
Mr Pinho expects that figure to rise to 21 per cent by 2015, which would have a significant impact on the Portuguese economy, the Portugal News reports.
Tourism generated Ôé¼7 billion in receipts in 2006, and the predicted rise in visitors would translate into between Ôé¼14.5 billion and Ôé¼15.5 billion of revenue, making up 15 per cent of GDP.
Britons will no doubt continue to contribute a large proportion of Portugal's overall number of visitors as the country has long been a favourite with UK tourists.
A recent survey from A Place in the Sun magazine also showed that traditional holiday destinations were still popular with Britons looking to buy abroad.
As well as Portugal, traditional investment areas such as Spain and Cyprus came out highly on the survey, as well as emerging favourites Turkey and Bulgaria.
