Portugal 'offers history and culture'

Portugal has been praised for offering a diverse range of attractions to foreign leisure travellers.

Australian tour operator Eastern Eurostars said the appeal of the country extends far beyond beach holidays as it has many different historical and cultural sites.

The company described Portugal as an inexpensive destination where people can enjoy a number of "stunning" and "fascinating" points of interest.

Capital city Lisbon was singled out as a particularly good place to visit, since it has interesting architecture and heritage sites, as well as good food and leisure facilities.

Eastern Eurostars commented: "It is a country of outstanding natural beauty, scattered with medieval towns and historic castles and palaces."

The diverse range of attractions in Portugal could help to explain why it has become so popular with overseas property buyers from the UK in the last few years.

Country Life magazine recently revealed that about 38,000 British nationals now live in Portugal on a full-time basis.

The publication added that a further 11,000 also own holiday homes across the country.
