Portugal hoping for 'spa tourism' boost

The Portuguese tourism authority is bidding to attract more foreign visitors to the country by placing a renewed emphasis on its historic spas.

Portugal has a number of natural spas renowned for the purity of their water, which is believed to have therapeutic qualities and is often used in relaxation techniques.

With Portugal's golf resorts already well known among tourists, tourism chiefs are now hoping to show another side to the country by raising awareness of its spa resorts, nubricks.com reports.

According to the website, the scheme has the potential to create "new tourism hotspots" in a country already extremely popular with international visitors.

Famous historic spas in Portugal include Monfortinho, which is situated on the border with Spain.

Last week the Times reported that the Silver Coast, Lisbon and Porto are emerging as popular markets for property investors seeking alternatives to the Algarve.
