Passenger numbers grow at UK airport

An airport in the UK has reported its highest ever passenger numbers during the month of June.

Edinburgh Airport revealed that more than 859,000 people passed through its doors last month, reports the Edinburgh Evening News.

This is 1.5 per cent higher than the amount recorded during the same period of 2007, taking the overall number of people using the airport in the last year to 9.1 million.

Figures showed that this was partially due to the increased take-up of flights to traditional tourism hotspots, such as Alicante in Spain's Costa Blanca.

Countries such as France and Italy were also said to be very popular with Scottish leisure travellers during this period.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents, the credit crunch is not putting people in the UK off booking a trip abroad.

The organisation believes the current strength of the euro against the pound is not significantly denting the appeal of eurozone countries.
