Oil pipeline 'to aid Burgas'

Burgas in Bulgaria could be set to make between $35-50 million (£17-24 million) from the oil pipeline that is set to travel from the area to Alexandroupolis in Greece.

Such a figure came out after a meeting between Assen Gagauzov, the regional development minister, interior minister Rumen Petkov and officials from the municipal council, reports novinite.com.

Deputy mayor Venelin Todorov was also present, the publication stated.

Residents of the area have also been told that that they can have say on the proposed construction of the pipeline, which will take oil into the Mediterranean area.

Talks had taken place for about a decade regarding its possible development, before Russia, Greece and Bulgaria decided on a deal.

In total, 166km of pipes are set to travel through Bulgaria with an annual oil capacity of 25 million tonnes, rising to 50 million.

The city of Burgas has a population of 205,821 and is the fourth-largest city in the country in terms of number of people that live there.
