New regeneration development in Morocco

A property development project with a difference is taking place in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, reports the National.

The Dubai-based newspaper has reported on a joint venture between an Abu Dhabi development firm and a Moroccan government company along the banks of the Bouregreg River.

According to the newspaper a marina and luxury complex is being built on the river, which used to be extremely polluted and unsuitable for development. Once completed the Bab Al Bahr project will include housing, five star accommodation and seven museums.

Lemghari Essakl, chief executive of Bab al Bahr Development, said: "There have been so many attempts over the years to fix this place. His Majesty's main purpose is to preserve the valley and open it up to more people."

It is hoped that the development will help to revive the area and draw in visitors.

This is one of a number of developments taking place in Morocco aimed at increasing the country's popularity as a tourist destination. Marriott International is due to open a new luxury hotel in Marrakesh in 2012 and Monte Carlo SBM is planning a £120 million development in the city.
