New pipe link gains support from minister

Proposals for a new pipeline link between Turkey and Turkmenistan have gained the support of energy and natural resources minister in the country Hilmi Guler.

The pipeline will link the countries together via the Caspian Sea, going across Azerbaijan and the Caspian Corridor, reports Today's Zaman.

Such a route is favoured by the country and will offer numerous benefits in the expansion of the country, Mr Guler commented.

Speaking during an East meets West: New Horizons in Energy Security conference, the politician stated that Turkey stands in an important location geographically.

The project marks significant investment in the country for the future, he added.

"If this project can be finished, not only Turkey but also the European Union will feel at ease," he commented.

Moreover, the politician stated that concerns about the environment are unnecessary as gas and oil are already being piped out of the Caspian.

The Caspian Sea is bordered by a number of countries including Russia and Iran.
