New flights 'boosting interest in Morocco'
The increase in direct flights between the UK and Morocco is set to encourage more British people to visit the North African nation, it has been claimed.
Jane Folliott, commercial director at Orion Trek Voyages, believes the ancient city of Fez is one of the destinations likely to experience a rise in visitor numbers as awareness of Morocco grows among holidaymakers.
She said that Fez is a "deeply spiritual city" which has been overshadowed by other Moroccan tourist destinations such as Marrakesh in recent years.
"Hopefully direct flights to Fez will help re-stimulate interest in this city and the surrounding areas of this region more," Ms Folliott commented.
She explained that exploring the city "provides a glimpse of the changing history of Morocco", with its spectacular buildings displaying a combination of Islamic, Jewish and French colonial influences.
The Independent recently described the ninth-century medina in Fez as "the finest showcase of architecture in North Africa".
Atlas Blue is set to launch a new twice-weekly service from London Gatwick Airport to Fez in January.
