New EU president makes pledge to Turkey

Turkish hopes of joining the European Union (EU) have received a boost after the incoming president of the union stated that he will treat the country fairly.

Portuguese prime minister Jose Socrates said that one of his aims is to continue discussions with the country in regards to it becoming a member of the EU, reports the Associated Press.

Mr Socrates said that he will do his utmost to uphold the reputation of the union.

"We must be first and foremost loyal at what we pledged to do. The most important thing is that we should be loyal in these negotiations. We should be balanced and moderate," he commented.

As part of its presidency, Portugal is to aim to help the decision making process within the EU, so that decisions can be made with greater transparency.
