Most Turks 'want direct president election process'

The majority of Turkish people would like the next president to be elected by a direct vote, a new poll showed.

According to the Estima poll published in the Vatan Newspaper, 74.2% of those who responded stated that they would agree to a referendum that would change the voting process, reports the Turkish Daily News.

However, there is unlikely to be a chance for those in Turkey to directly elect the president until 2014, the paper contended, as the next official in office is likely to stay in power for a 7-year term.

The poll is announced as the Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes the country is getting closer to electing a new president.

Earlier this year, an assembly could not be formed after the two main political parties in the country could not reach a consensus.

In total, 2,034 people took part in the survey which was conducted across 26 different provinces.
