Morocco's non-agricultural economic growth 'set to quicken'
Morocco's economic growth is set to quicken thanks during the second quarter of 2007 thanks to the expansion of non-agricultural industries, according to a new report.
The country's high planning commission has predicted growth of 4.9% between April and June 2007, compared to 4.8% during the first quarter of 2007 and 4.1 per cent for the first three months of last year.
Alarab Online reports that growth figures for the first quarter of the year could be damaged slightly by a drought, which may also affect overall growth figures for the year.
However, the news provider highlights financial reforms that have made Morocco more attractive to private investors, in addition to planned infrastructure projects worth approximately $17 billion.
Despite this, there is still some way to go before the Moroccan government can claim to "unshackle" the economy of its agricultural roots, Alarab Online concluded.
Earlier this week, the Oxford Business Group reported that a new fibre optic data network could boost the Moroccan economy by providing a hi-tech infrastructure.
