Morocco receives grant for hi-tech electricity project
Morocco has received a multi-million dollar grant from the World Bank to help fund a programme that will assist the country in helping to achieve a low-carbon economy.
The World Bank has put forward $43.2 million (£29.3 million) towards a project to further the development of integrated solar combined cycle power technology, which is a method of electricity generation designed to reduce greenhouse emissions.
Lasting three years, the project will allow the Moroccan government meet its "urgent need" for new electricity generation, while reducing its dependence on others.
The project represents a strategic partnership between the World Bank and Morocco that paves the way for long term technical and financial support in the energy sector," remarked Theodore Ahlers, World Bank country director for Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.
Furthermore, the World Bank claims that the effect of the project will be felt more widely in the Moroccan economy as the technology progresses.
According to the Nam News Network, the Moroccan government has earmarked $2.08 billion for the redevelopment of the country's rail network.
