Morocco fishing agreement 'is a key step towards Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Area'
A new fisheries agreement between Morocco and the European Union (EU) represents a major step forward towards creating a Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Area, according to the European Commission.
The EU and Morocco plan to cooperate closely on fishing policy as part of their 4-year agreement, focusing "firmly" on creating new fishing facilities in Moroccan waters for the benefit of both parties.
The commission claims that this will have positive economic implications and will strengthen relations between the Morocco and the EU, with the aim of establishing the Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Area.
Joe Borg, commissioner for fisheries and maritime affairs, commented: "I am delighted to be in Morocco which is a privileged and valued partner of the European Union in so many fields.
"I am convinced that the fisheries partnership agreement between the EU and Morocco will allow us to strengthen our common work towards better management of fisheries resources and protection of the marine environment."
The European Union is Morocco's biggest trading partner, with business between the two countries having "flourished" over the last decade.
