Montenegro tipped to join Nato
Montenegro is widely expected to be invited to join Nato very soon, it has been reported.
According to the Montenegro Times, the eastern European country is participating at the group's summit in Bucharest, which is being attended by figures including US president George Bush.
The newspaper has stated that a formal invitation may be issued at next year's summit in Berlin following a number of talks.
Membership of Nato is increasingly becoming an important political issue in Montenegro, with the major political parties all using it as part of their campaign for the presidential election.
However, the Montenegro Times states that lingering resentment over Nato's Balkan operations in the late 1990's could prompt many people to vote against joining the body in the event of a referendum.
The country became an independent nation two years ago and was formerly part of Yugoslavia, although it was united with Serbia between 2003 and 2006.
