Money 'pouring into Moroccan tourist sector'

Authorities in Morocco are continuing to pump money into its expanding holiday industry, it has been reported.

According to Magharebia.com, tourism investment in eastern parts of the country increased from £11,377,033 to £166,731,560.

Citing figures from Morocco's Commerce, Industry and Services Chamber, the news provider added that tourism accounted for more than half of overall investment last year.

The various projects across the industry were also said to have created thousands of new job opportunities.

Meanwhile, the figures also revealed that the number of people visiting Morocco has increased in recent years.

Tourist numbers between 1995 and 2005 rose by 21 per cent, mainly due to a surge in the amount of holidaymakers coming from France, Spain and the UK.

The release of the data comes shortly after cultural holiday firm Journey Beyond Travel highlighted the popularity of North Africa among leisure travellers.

Morocco was said to be popular because it offered "exotic" surroundings and was easily accessible to people in Europe.
