Marrakesh invests in attracting tourism

Marrakesh is undergoing a makeover to transform it into a modern tourist destination, reports USA Today.

The newspaper states that the Moroccan city is merging the old and the new in an attempt to draw in 10 million visitors a year by 2010.

It states that: "Throughout this 900-year-old city, a blizzard of tourism-related projects is underway, even in the midst of the global recession."

Some of the projects identified include the conversion of a historic palace into a cosmopolitan restaurant, and the creation of a new golf resort. It reports that celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Anniston have been spotted taking in some of the city's delights.

Recently there has been a mass of investment in Marrakesh, and Morocco, creating the buzz that it will be seen as a tourism hot spot for the next few years. Off-plan property is popping up outside the ancient city walls as investors aim to cash in on the boom.

Figures reported on ANSAmed, reveal that in the past few years air travel to Morocco has doubled, thanks to an agreement about common airspace with the European Union.
