Malaga bids to be named European Capital of Culture

The popular Spanish tourist destination of Malaga is set for a makeover as the city prepares to launch its bid to be crowned European Capital of Culture in 2016.

The city has already attracted more than 100,000 signatures supporting its bid, with public institutions, municipalities and other associations also lending their support, Spanish newspaper SUR reports.

Becoming the European Capital of Culture would raise the profile of Malaga internationally, attracting more investment to the city. Both Newcastle-Gateshead and Liverpool attracted a great deal of improvements in the run-up to their bids for the 2008 crown.

If Malaga is to win the bid, however, they will have to beat competition from other Spanish cities, with a dozen in total interested in the title.

In addition to the probable cultural enrichment Malaga will undergo, the city has also received an infrastructure boost with a high speed rail track planned to link it with Seville.

The connection, planned to open in 2010, will make cut travelling time to Seville just 55 minutes and could make Malaga even more attractive to tourists.
