Major tourism fair held in Turkey

One of the most important events in the Turkish tourism industry calendar was held in Izmir last week (November 27th).

Representatives of 18 nations were expected to visit Travel Turkey Izmir during the four-day event, which is designed to reflect the country's growing influence in global tourism and property investment markets.

"We are just aiming to bring professionals together with their Turkish professionals," said Dogan Isleyen, general manager of the event.

He added: "We hope the tourism industry will overcome the global crisis by looking to alternative countries that are taking part in the fair."

Visitors from countries such as the UK, France and the United Arab Emirates were expected in Izmir during the weekend.

Turkey's reputation as a budget-friendly holiday destination has boosted its tourism industry during the economic downturn.

Currency firm Travelex recently stated that the country's favourable exchange rate has been attracting many British visitors during 2008.
