Mainland Europe opened up to Scots

Consumers in Scotland are set to benefit from the introduction of new flights to mainland Europe, it has been confirmed.

Services to destinations such as Spain, France and Italy are currently being rolled out at Edinburgh Airport by low-cost airline Ryanair.

The budget airline is also offering passage to a number of destinations across eastern Europe, further opening up the region to Scottish people.

This is likely to have a number of positive consequences, such as increasing tourism in the various locations, which in turn should add to their appeal among foreign property buyers.

Commenting on the new flights, Edinburgh Airport said it was likely to attract an extra 1.2 million air passengers.

Managing director David Johnston remarked: "We are proud that Edinburgh has a destinations network fit for a world class capital city."

Meanwhile, Ryanair has revealed that the number of people it transported in February 2008 was 20% up on the same period of the previous year.
